Stop Global Warming

Greenhouse gases are composed of water vapor, methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrous oxide. These natural greenhouse gases are absorbed by the earth's surface causing the temperature to rise. The level of energy absorbed from the sun should be the same amount of energy to be reflected back into space to achieve balance in the emission and absorption of these gases. However, if the earth absorb too much of this greenhouse gas, the temperature continues to rise causing a greenhouse effect which warms the earth's surface. Aside from the greenhouse gases derived from natural sources such as carbon cycle from plant photosynthesis, there are human-made emissions that can contribute to greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere. If these gases accumulate in an increasing rate, we experience global warming.

Through the use of energy which is influenced by economic growth in our modern world, humans are held responsible in the process of global warming. Statistics from the website, eia.doe.gov, show that carbon dioxide emitted from energy, such as petroleum and natural gas, corresponds to 82% of total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States alone. Also greenhouse gas such as methane that comes from landfills, coal mines, oil and gas operations, and agriculture corresponds to 9% of total emissions. Nitrous oxide, which comprises 5% of the total emission, is derived from burning fossil fuels and through the use of certain fertilizers and industrial processes. Human-made gases (2% contribution to total emission) are released as byproducts of industrial processes and through leakage.

Although there is natural variability of the earth's climate, assessments generally suggest that human activity has an influence in the greenhouse effect which concludes that there are ways that human can do to prevent global warming. Studies suggest that burning of fossil fuels contributes to global warming. Fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas used up about 85% of the energy utilized in the United States. This means these are used about two-thirds of the electricity and transportation fuels.

Subsequently, one will help minimize or stop global warming by lessening the use of this energy. This means that we should minimize electric consumption as possible or use appliances or devices that require less electricity. Moreover, we should also find a way to reduce gas consumption in vehicles and even in cooking. In industry or businesses, an emission reduction program should be implemented.

These may be practical applications in stopping global warming. Initial things to be done is to inform the public, administered by the government, about the information on global warming and provide and implement law and policy that will enable significant awareness and cooperation from the public on the reduction of gas emission that cause the greenhouse effect.
