It's the legacy of Fritz Schumacher, the late German economist and author of such works as "Small is Beautiful" and "Buddhist Economics," which decried economic growth, consumerism and materialism. In February, the society proudly welcomed a new co-conspirator to its board, Gus Speth, a professor of environmental policy at Yale and co-founder of the radical Natural Resources Defense Council. Speth's model of a new politics calls for a "progressive (envirospeak for leftist) coalition to build a mighty force" including "union members, working families, minorities and people of color, religious organizations, the women's movement" and others of "complimentary interest and shared fate. So, when the AGW bubble bursts, expect it to be succeeded by this "new economics," which is hardly new; just a different shade of lipstick on the old Malthusian, Marxian, Progressive, industrial-policy pig. It's only the latest excuse to hand over control of the society and the economy to elitist, technocratic, enviro, central-economic-planning, government bureaucrats.
