(global warming news) New report says combating global warming is possible - ABC Online
The global consultancy firm, McKinsey and Company, has published a new report arguing it is possible to keep global warming to a manageable level and the costs, while large, need not be excessive. You're turning over your entire vehicle fleet at least one and a half times between now and 2030, so there's a lot of scope to have these things in place, both on the engine side, the cars we drive the houses we live in, and on the supply side, the power stations that we use to generate electricity. From a climate change point of view the recession must be seen as an opportunity for change and that's really something that we're seeing very strongly in the United States, where the emphasis under Obama is very much on the new jobs that can be created in the new industries in the clean and green industries. What we need particularly as our government is looking at its stimulus package and the like, we'd far prefer for the Government to be looking at stimulus in the construction and deployment of clean energy technologies and in energy efficiency in our buildings and other places, rather than just cash handouts. We are in a make or break situation and particularly if we don't integrate our response to the climate crisis to the response to the financial crisis, we will be stuffed and we will be left behind the eight ball with very significant warming in the not too distant future.
