California Climate Registry protects the environment.

by Daniel Stouffer

The California Climate Action Registry, also known as the California Climate Registry, is a program under the supervision of the Climate Action Reserve. The Registry works to solve the problems caused by climate change through the enhancement of reporting requirements.

The California Climate Registry had only 20 or so members when it was first formed, but has grown to include all the 300 major corporations, municipalities, universities, government agencies and organizations involved in environmental issues. All these entities voluntarily measure, oversee and report their greenhouse gas emissions. Collectively, they are actively working towards a solution to climate change.

The California Climate Registry members keenly participate in proactive measures to verify their greenhouse gas emissions. The state of California recognizes their foresight and offers appropriate consideration. When future state, federal or international GHG regulations are brought in, the members foresight will be recognized.

Following a lobby from a group of CEOs, a bill was introduced to the California state legislature and the California Climate Registry was formed. Gov. Gray Davis signed a bill into law on October 13, 2001 to form the structure of the registry.

As climate change goals beyond state borders, the California Climate Registry ceded its duties to the Climate Registry. The California organization will continue to report emissions as a program under the auspices of the Climate Action Reserve.

The California Climate Registry is an integral program under the umbrella of the Climate Action Reserve. The Reserve's stated goal is to work to ensure environmental benefits, integrity and progressive movement in greenhouse gas emissions, reductions and policies.

It is anticipated that members of the California Action Registry will continue to be actively involved and participate in market based solutions together with relevant regulations, as they strive to reduce the effect of greenhouse gas emissions on our climate.

Organizations involved in greenhouse gas production face increasingly onerous reporting requirements. Regulations are forcing such companies to consider their reporting methods. Many companies are now turning to software applications and programs which will help them gather and report the relevant data more effectively.
