Global Warming Sea Level

About six thousand years ago, the sea level, after rising with the melting of the glaciers when the world witnessed the last of the Ice Age, became stable. Over the last one hundred years, it has been observed to have risen again at a considerably fast rate. It is alarming to note that in just over the last century the sea level has risen more than the average rate it took it to rise the last thousand years.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that at this rate, the chances for the seal level to continue to rise in an alarming level are high and putting carbon dioxide emissions on a stable point will only reduce this chance by half.

Looking at the consequences of these estimates, we are looking at a horrible scenario where islands and other coastal cities will be erased from the maps. Saltwater will pollute groundwater aquifers and soak harbors, wetlands, and tunnels.

And if you think that's not enough, here are other consequences you'd wish you weren't alive to witness anymore.

If we think it's scary for the glaciers to rapidly melt, we cannot imagine the fear that we have to contain when the West Antarctic Sheet does its own share of melting. This will induce a 20 feet rise in the sea level and eventually it's sayonara for our coastal cities.

Methane, a strong greenhouse gas, is abundantly stored in the continental shelves. Warming coastal waters will trigger the release of the gases that will result in increased warming. The same effects can be observed when the Arctic tundra is abnormally heated.

Despite the fact that there is a global agreement on the issue about the planet having witnessed considerable surface warming over the past one hundred years, there still remains one question about how much has nature got to do with it and up to what point can we blame ourselves. Unless the two things are clearly distinguished getting into global warming treaties with every single nation will seem pointless.

Nevertheless, there should be no question regarding when we should do something about the problem as we are faced with the possibility of complete erosion of low-lying nations and coastal areas. This alone should be reason enough that significant effort must be made to find answers to questions on global warming. Sea level increase or decrease should therefore be studied exhaustively in relation to the how it is affected by global warming.
